First Steps

This evening, James was on the phone with his parents in Texas seeing how they fared after Ike. They are fine, no power, but no major damage either.

My dad was playing ball with Cecilia in the kitchen while Felicity chased small blue plastic golf balls around the kitchen floor.

Felicity pulled herself up to a standing position leaning on the kitchen cabinet beneath the sink. Then she turned facing Grandpa and Cecilia. I was standing near her having just put some dishes and glasses from our Sunday Cookie Evening treat in the dishwasher. Then she did it. She took a step. She had tried to take a step a couple times before but always fell before regaining her balance. Not this time. Then she took another step. And kept her balance standing while I applauded. Grandpa and Cecilia began applauding and Cecilia let out a loud "Yeah!" Felicity began applauding and I went and told James what had just happened. He relayed the news to his parents over the phone.

Then she fell down. But it was a good and long-anticipated start.

  1. Congratulations, Felicity.

I love that moment-- though it's also a little bittersweet, isn't it? In fact, I had a dream the other night that Sophia was taking her first steps. But we've still got a ways to go before we get there.

  2. James was dreaming she was going to start walking a couple of weeks ago. Yes, I always look forward to that moment, but it is the end of something isn't it? At least she isn't going off to college yet. :)
