2017 Patron Saint

For the past few years I've picked a Saint and a word for the year. But I think this year, the Saint picked me. He has been stalking me for a bit now, so my patron for 2017 is Saint Francis de Sales.

Saint Francis de Sales was born in Savoy, France in 1567. He studied law and theology at the University of Padua earning a doctorate in both fields and it was against his family's wishes that he then began studying to become a priest. He was known for his writings and preaching, especially against Calvinism and his gentle ways won over many. He even used sign language to preach to the deaf. In 1602 he became the bishop of Geneva, Switzerland. He was friends with St. Vincent de Paul and spiritual director to St. Jane de Chantal and helped her found the Order of the Visitation. He died on December 28, 1622 but many of his writings exist to this day. He was canonized by Pope Pius XI in 1923 and his feast day is January 24. He is the patron of authors, confessors, deaf people, educators, journalists, teachers, and writers.

He is a Saint I have always admired and who I would love to have my back.
